For example, you can set it up so that the top of the list is always applications, followed by documents, folders, email messages, music. etc. Whatever works for you. You can also eliminate topics.

A lot of people (especially those who don't like to use the Dock) like to use Spotlight as a fast way to access their applications, so they always want them to appear at the top of the search list. It is really quick to type an "N" in spotlight and have Numbers appear. You click on it and the application Numbers will open for you.
