Annotate Images
One of the things I have to do as president of our local Mac users group is make a slide show once a month for our general meeting. As part of that show I like to feature our board members in recognition of all the hard work they do. I do it with a slide show of their pictures. For this new year I decided to add their names to the photos so that visitors could put a name with a face.

I decided to do this because it is so easy to do with the new annotate feature in Preview.

Open your document in Preview. I keep Preview in my Dock because I use it all the time, so I just drag a document over the Preview icon in my document to open it. If you don't have Preview in your Dock you can right click on the picture and select "Open document with" and choose Preview.

Once the document is open choose "Annotate" from the Tools menu.

Across the bottom are all your regular options. If you are working with a pdf document there are additional options like adding a link or a note.

To add the name to good ol' Steve's picture I choose the add text icon and drew a box where I wanted the text to go. To choose the font and font size I clicked on the "Aa" and to select the color I clicked on the color block.

The finished product looks like this. The whole process takes a minute at most.

This has all kinds of uses, particularly the ability to add arrows to pictures and maps.

How To Give Download Software As A Gift
I received a really good question today from a beginner friend of mine. She has a favorite application that she uses and she wants to give a copy of that application to another Mac user as a Christmas present.

The application can only be purchased through the Internet as a download.

My friend wanted to know if she could purchase the software license, download it to her computer and then burn the installation icon to a CD or a thumb drive and give it to her friend in that format.

The answer is maybe, but probably not. The primary problem is that software registration is usually tied to an email address -- it's often
impossible to register different email addresses for payment and user.

Your safest bet, and one you can complete right up to Christmas Eve, is to buy a Visa Gift Card for the exact amount of the software and present it in a card along with the name of the software you are gifting and the URL for the download.

You, of course, can use this same method to gift iPhone applications. You can buy iTunes gift cards at Apple stores for as little as $10 each, or you can buy the Visa Gift Card which can be applied to the users account for purchases.

Some Things To Try When You Can't Open E-Mail Attachments
1. You might not have the application that can open the files you
receive. If you don’t have the application, ask the sender to
send you the document in an application that you do have, or
as a .PDF document. If the person sent a Word document from
a Windows computer ask them to send the document again as
a Rich Text Format (RFT) file.

2. Save the document to your desktop and see if you can open it
from there.

3. If you receive a file as an attachment but you expect to see it
displayed within the text, check the file type. A .PDF file that
contains a single page appears within the body of the e-mail
message. A multipage .PDF document appears as an
attachment.

4. If you are using Mail, choose Mail > Preferences > Viewing.
Click “Display remote images in HTML messages”.

5. Try forwarding, redirecting, or sending the message to yourself
again.

Two Cool Gift Suggestions
If you are looking for unique, useful gifts for your Mac enthusiasts, I have a couple of suggestions. Both of these are laptop stands, but they are probably unlike any you have seen before. Even though different, both are very practical.

The first is the Xtand Cooling Bar. It sells for $39.99.

It is a solid aluminum cylinder, 15 inches long and about 2.5 inches around. One “side” is flat and holds a rubber pad to prevent slipping. Think of an orchestra conductor’s baton. It is stylish, light weight, and doesn’t take up much room, but it holds your laptop firmly in place, providing good airflow. Everyone who sees it will notice it. If you would like to see a full review of it you can see it here.

The second is the AViiQ Portable Laptop Stand. It sells for $79.95.

This is perhaps the perfect gift for the traveling man or woman. It weight 5.5 ounces and folds into a compact 12.75 x 2.75 x 0.25. It will hold any laptop computer up to 17”, and provides a 12 degree keyboard angle when open. It is easy to use and very sturdy, although it is also flexible. A cloth carrying bag is included. The white lines you see in the image are the fold lines. It folds up something like a map. A full review of this product can be viewed here
