What To Do When Your Mac Freezes
Sometimes your Mac will freeze on you. It might be because you are running an application that has bugs in it. It might be that you have too many applications open at once for the amount of memory that you have. It might be that there was a power surge. It might be that you have a problem with your Mac.

If this problem happens to you with any frequency you should get it checked out because with Macs it is not expected behavior. I have a Mac Book Pro and there are times that I have 8-10 applications open at a time because of work that I am doing and my machine has not had a freeze in the past 6 months.

But they do happen. Here are some ways you can get your Mac going again without doing damage.

Open the Force Quit Applications window so you can quit the frozen application without having to shut down your whole computer. Command-option-Escape.

Stop a Process. Command-period (.)

Force the computer to shut down. Hold down the Power button. Not your best option because it doesn't allow the computer to go through all the usual shut down steps.

Quit all open applications and restart. Command-Control-Media Eject key. If you can't find the Media Eject key look for it on the very top row of any Apple keyboard. It's probably something you haven't paid any attention to. It looks like a triangle with a line under it.

So You Need Help With Your Mac
OK, so here is the picture. You are a new Mac user (or trying to help a new Mac user). There is a problem, like maybe the computer won’t start up. There are a few basic things you need to know. What kind of Mac do you have? What OS are you running? When was it purchased? Do you have Apple Care? What’s the serial number?

And you are saying, “IT WON’T START, SO HOW DO I KNOW”

Protect yourself. Visit this URL: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT2471

You will find a form that Apple has put together for you that lets you gather all the important information in one place. You can prepare the form and then put it away somewhere safe and have it when you need it.

A lot of what you need you can find by clicking on the Apple menu > About This Mac. You will find the Processor and Memory information in that window. Then you can click on the "More Info" button and find the rest.

The Auto Fill Button in Safari
If you have Snow Leopard and it is your habit to shop and purchase on-line you might really like to add the Auto Fill button to your Safari toolbar. Doing so allows you to fill in your personal information with one click. The personal information is taken from your personal card in Address Book. To add the new Auto Fill button (or any other available button) to the tool bar, choose Safari > View > Customize Toolbar. When the toolbar window opens, drag the Auto Fill icon to the tool bar and release it.

Customize Toolbar Window in Safari

Place the Auto Fill Button in This Location

Now when you visit any web site that requires you to enter personal information all you have to do is click in the first information field and then click on the Auto Fill button. Your information will be filled in for you. It's a great time saver.

iPhone Typing Tip For Those of Us Over Age 15
If you are over 15 or don't have someone near that age to teach you the iPhone tricks, here is a tip that will help make your iPhone typing easier. It has made my life easier since I tend to type using whole words and complete sentences, old fogey that I am.

If you have done much iPhone typing you knows that iPhone automatically corrects and suggests words as you type. To accept the suggested word, tap the space bar. Tap the "x" and it not only dismisses the suggested word, but it helps iPhone learn the word you typed.

The keyboard automatically inserts apostrophes into contractions. I was so glad to learn this one. No more switching keyboards.

And, perhaps my favorite tip of all, if you tap the space bar twice, it adds a period.

Fast Tip For Snow Leopard Users
You can use the Option key to get otherwise hidden information about the Airport, Bluetooth, and MobileMe Sync connections on your Mac if you are running Snow Leopard. Icons for each of these connections will be available in the Finder tool bar unless you don’t have the connections themselves.

Airport Icon

Bluetooth Icon

Sync Icon

As an example we will look at Sync.

If you just click on the Sync Icon you get the following information:

But if you hold down the Option key while you click on the Sync Icon all of the following information is now revealed.

If this is the kind of information that is helpful to you, then remember the helpful little Option key.
